Therapy for elbow instabilities

Elbow instabilities are caused by injuries to the stabilizing ligaments, usually as a result of accidents, hyperextension or repeated overloading. The joint loses its natural guidance, which can lead to an unsteady feeling, pain and repeated dislocations or restricted movement.
Those affected often feel that their arm gives way under strain, have difficulty turning or feel that “something is wrong” in the elbow joint. If left untreated, instability can lead to chronic pain, cartilage damage or permanent movement restrictions.
Depending on the extent of the instability, a precise diagnosis is first made using clinical examination and imaging. In the case of pronounced instability or structural damage, surgical stabilization is necessary - for example by suturing or reconstructing the injured ligaments, sometimes using the body's own tendon material.
