Tennis elbow (epicondylitis humeri radialis)

Causes, symptoms and treatment options

FOCUS ON FUNCTION

Tennis elbow (epicondylitis humeri radialis)

Tennisellenbogen

Tennis elbow - medically known as epicondylitis humeri radialis - is a painful irritation of the tendon insertions on the outside of the elbow. Despite the name, not only tennis players are affected: The condition also frequently occurs during manual work or other one-sided, repetitive strain.

Pain on the outside of the elbow is typical and can occur during gripping movements, when lifting objects or even at rest. In some cases, the pain radiates into the forearm or hand. The cause is overloading of the extensor muscles at the elbow, which can lead to micro-injuries and chronic irritation.

Treatment usually begins conservatively: rest, targeted physiotherapy, stretching exercises, anti-inflammatory measures, immobilization in a wrist cuff at night and adjustment of ergonomics at the workplace.

Injections with cortisone should be avoided. Alternatively, injections of platelet rich plasma (PRP) - autologous blood enriched with growth factors - can be very helpful, as PRP has a self-healing and regenerative potential.

Surgical intervention is very rarely necessary.

If you suffer from weight-bearing elbow pain, we will carefully assess your symptoms and discuss the best treatment options with you - tailored to your individual situation.
